Chaos Walking, 2021 - ★★½ (contains spoilers)This review may contain spoilers. It's a weird style, similar to Cowboys and Aliens I'd say. I guess it's a sort of science-fiction road movie. The interesting gimmick: Humanity has begun to colonize a class M planet on which every man's thoughts are automagically uttered aloud for anybody to hear (and see) as constant noise. Every man (women are exempt for some reason) has to deal with their thoughts being openly accessible to everybody else. This however does not explain why the first wave of settlers (the movie starts in a small village entirely male) seems to be quite hostile towards a single woman (Ridley) who's scout ship one day crash-lands on their turf. Only Holland's character seems to be interested in helping her, which is why they go on an adventuress cross-country trip to warn her ship. And of cause they grow to like each other, although this is pretty platonic.
I'm afraid this doesn't make much sense to me. Why would a group of colonists apparently kill all their women? Just because of the noise effect? They must be aware that colonising kinda ends when there are no women there. Other colonists THAT LIVE MERELY A DAY AWAY have apparently gotten that. And why does a technically advanced humanity have to resort to wild west style settlements and settlers? They apparently do have much more advanced tech weapons, but still ride horses? They have a ship wreck witth communication on board (that's easily repaired in the movie) but haven't tried to contact other ships, if only to explain what is going on there? Why are there aliens on that planet but no one has apparently tried to communicate with them? Wouldn't that be a first before you set up shop? Again, humanity can apparently transport horses through space, why would you not sent a few xeno-biologist along?
Otherwise there are a few nice action sequences and a whole lot of questions that remain firmly unanswered even at the end.
